Corrections Inmate Employment (CIE) Instructors train prisoners to improve their work habits, skills and experience within a business-like environment, increasing their chances of getting sustainable employment on release.

CIE Instructors play an active role in helping prisoners to rehabilitate themselves through work.  This work, though within a prison, resembles as closely as possible similar work in the market place.

The key accountabilities/responsibilities for a CIE Instructor are:

  • Teaching and assessing prisoners’ work habits, skills and providing on the job work experience
  • Maintaining custodial responsibility of prisoners, ensuring their safe, secure and humane containment
  • Ensuring goods and services produced meet agreed standards and contracts.

Instructors train prisoners in industries and occupations that provide the most relevant experience and training for sustainable and legitimate employment after release.

Currently these include:

• Farming

• Textiles
• Horticulture Catering and laundry services
• Forestry • Timber processing
• Grounds/Prison maintenance • Painting
• Light manufacturing • Pre-cast concrete
• Joinery & furniture • Distribution
• Printing • Distribution warehouse

CIE Instructors play an active part in prisoners’ reintegration back into the community, making a very real contribution to the Department of Corrections' goal to reduce re-offending.

Instructors are passionate about their work. They are committed to helping make the community safe and to helping prisoners turn their lives around – enabling them to make a positive change…Are you?
