Community Probation & Psychological Services (CPPS) is one of the two operational arms of the New Zealand Department of Corrections Ara Poutama Aotearoa.

Our purpose is to improve public safety by ensuring sentence compliance and reducing re-offending.

We have over 1500 staff in more than 150 sites and manage around 90,000 sentences and orders per year.  Our frontline staff include probation officers, psychologists, programme facilitators, community work supervisors, managers and administrators – all of whom are supported with advice and guidance from head office in Wellington.

We manage offenders on a range of sentences or orders with specific aims such as reparation to the community, punishment (restriction of liberty), and rehabilitation.  Offenders may be subject to one or more of these at a time.

CPPS also provides information about offenders to help the courts make sentencing decisions, and to help the New Zealand Parole Board decide if someone should be released from prison.  And we design and deliver interventions, such as rehabilitation programmes, to help offenders work towards an offence-free lifestyle.
