Debbie Prior to being promoted to Nursing Team Leader, I was a Registered Nurse for four years at the Department. Before Corrections I worked overseas in various hospitals, primary health care and sexual health and emergency. Working as a nurse in a prison setting is a highly skilled and challenging job, providing a full range of primary health care services. Prisoners often arrive at prisons with poor health, so we see a vast array of health issues. On a day-to-day basis we treat cardiovascular and respiratory problems, infection (skin/systemic), mental health disorder, drug and alcohol issues and accidents and emergencies. The Department encourages and supports nurses undertaking post graduate study and attending appropriate conferences. I have found nursing in prison to be a rewarding career, both personally and professionally.
