What is the salary range?

The salary ranges for Nurses are:

* Enrolled Nurses $47,182 to $49,991 (plus PDRP on achievement)
* Registered Nurses $50,103 to $67,066 (plus PDRP on achievement)
* Team Leader $76,701

What are the hours and will I need to do shift work?

Nurses work rostered hours, which include weekends and public holidays, however no nightshifts are required. The hours a Health Centre needs to be covered are 7am until 10pm.

The nature of the roster is dependent on the requirements of health services in the specific prison. Prisons that receive sentenced and remand inmates from the Court (‘receiving prisons’) have a roster that includes the requirement to work later into the evening and at weekends. An ‘on call’ roster provides acute management support during hours without health services staff rostered on site. Rostered weekends vary from site to site, with most nurses having approximately every alternate weekend off.

How many registered nurses are there in the team at each prison?

This varies significantly due to the size of the prison and prisoner population, and the time of day, and weekends when nurses are on-call. A team at a prison comprises 4 to 10 nurses plus a health administrator and the Health Centre manager and/or team leader.
Between one and six nurses are on duty at any one time depending on time of day and the size of prison. Some sites may have one nurse on duty at times.

I am an overseas applicant, can I still apply?

Yes, absolutely. First of all, gain a New Zealand Nurses Registration and Certification with the New Zealand Nursing Council, then apply for a work permit or visa. See more information about this from the Ministry of Health.

What are the specific challenges involved in nursing in prison?

Prison nurses are required to deal with a vast array of health issues and provide a full range of primary health care services to prisoners. All prisoners have their health needs assessed upon arrival at prison and nurses work with the prisoner to manage identified health issues and help them improve their health.
