What engagement activities has Corrections undertaken?

In November, we delivered letters to around 145 nearby dwellings, and followed this up by speaking face-to-face with residents from around 90 per cent of these.

On 2 and 3 December, we met with around 35 people in community information sessions that we held at Rehua marae.

Our community engagement will continue through 2021. We are continuing to respond to public enquiries about the project.

How is Corrections engaging with Ngāi Tahu about the programme?

Corrections is continuing to engage with Ngāi Tahu. Ngāi Tūāhuriri have asked us to engage with Mahaanui Kurataiao to undertake an assessment of the impacts of the proposed programme on rangatiratanga and the principals of Te Tiriti o Waitangi. It recommends that we explore several options with Ngāi Tūāhuriri, including:

  • Naming the service
  • A tikanga advisor assigned by Ngāi Tūāhuriri.
