Auckland Prison Capacity Increase Proposal
New Zealand has a rising prison population, and we have a responsibility to keep communities safe. To safely manage increasing prisoner numbers, we’re proposing to increase the total number of prisoners which Auckland Prison is permitted to accommodate.
What’s being proposed
The Department of Corrections – Ara Poutama Aotearoa (Corrections) is seeking to change the existing designation at Auckland Prison under the Fast-Track Approvals Act 2024 (FTAA).
A ‘designation’ is a legal tool that allows certain land to be set aside for a specific public purpose, like a prison. This change to the designation would allow the prison’s capacity to increase from 681 to 1,220 people.
Planning is in the early stages, and we have done some technical work to help us understand what we are able to do in terms of potential future development activity. This includes the potential location of new prisoner accommodation and support facilities, building height, and the amount of land we can build on.
It’s important to note that this is only a proposal at this stage and is subject to future funding decisions. No design or future site layout has been confirmed.
Corrections is currently preparing an application, supported by technical reports, which will be submitted to the Environmental Protection Authority (EPA) later this year.
Any new development to increase capacity at Auckland Prison is anticipated to be delivered in stages over approximately a 10-year period.
