Bay of Plenty residential service

Ara Poutama Aotearoa – Department of Corrections wants to establish a transitional housing service at 240 Rangiuru Road, Te Puke for men who are committed to their rehabilitation and living crime-free. Up to fifteen men will live at the property and be supported to transition to independent living in the Bay of Plenty region. Residents will receive 24-7 on-site support from experienced service provider staff, who will work alongside probation officers and other local Community Corrections staff to help them to successfully reintegrate into the community.

We have been engaging with local stakeholders and members of the community to find out how the proposed service will affect them and to explore how we can work together if we decide to go ahead. We will update this page throughout our community engagement.

Following extensive engagement with the community, Ara Poutama is close to making a decision on whether this service will go ahead.

When that decision is made we will let the community know through direct communication as well as updating this webpage.

Community information sessions

On Thursday 24 June 2021, we hosted community information sessions at 240 Rangiuru Road alongside staff from Manaaki Support Services, our preferred service provider for the proposed service. Around thirty members of the community attended the sessions and talked with us about what we want to do.

We heard that the community mostly supports how the service would make a difference in the lives of people looking to reintegrate into the Bay of Plenty after serving a sentence. However, some concerns were raised about:

  • The suitability of the location
  • Safety to neighbours’ property
  • Whether the eligibility criteria might change
  • Whether the number of residents might be increased.

Thank you to all who made time to meet with us. We have used this feedback to work through some potential new initiatives and enhancements and are continuing to respond to public enquiries.
