11.1 Age and Ethnicity

The 1145 remand inmates (made up of 73 females and 1072 males) represented just 18 percent of the total of 6,240 inmates (excluding home detainees).

Compared to the sentenced inmate population (see Tables 3-1), the remand population tends to be younger: the age profile of remand inmates reveals 33 percent were aged 17 to 24 years at the time of the census, and only 16 percent over 40 years old.

Of the remanded inmates, 374 indicated identification with more than one ethnicity, with a small number (4) identifying as many as four ethnicities. Ethnicities were grouped and individuals categorised as shown in the table below: 51 percent of the total remand inmates identified themselves solely as M?ori.
