12.2 Age and Ethnicity

Compared to sentenced inmates, the home detention population is weighted toward an older age group, a factor generally associated with a lower risk of re-offending. Also evident is a lower proportion of Māori subject to this type of sentence; this may however reflect the higher frequency of this sentence option’s use by Courts in areas, such as Christchurch, which have a lower proportion of Māori in the general population.
