3.4 Iwi Affiliation

Fifty-four percent of sentenced inmates that identified a primary ethnicity of Māori also identified an iwi affiliation (86 women and 1,315 men). Of the 1401 inmates that identified with an iwi, 357 identified with two iwi and 100 identified with more than two iwi. Only the primary iwi affiliation identified by inmates is analysed below.

To simplify these iwi affiliations, iwi have been grouped according to regions.
